DAN RAY
Trenton Central High School – National Champion
Danny Ray won everything. He was a state champion, a sectional champion, a conference champion, a member of two state championship teams, and a 2-time national champion.
Ray had an outstanding career for the Tornados, playing a key role in their back to back Group 4 State T&F Championships in 1944 and 1945.
As a junior at the 1944 State Meet, Ray was the high point scorer for
Trenton as they claimed the team title. He finished runner-up in the 120 Hurdles, and 3rd in the 220 Hurdles.
In his senior season at the 1945 State Meet, Ray won the state crown in the 120 Hurdles, finished runner-up in the 220 Hurdles, and scored 5th in the High Jump, to again lead the championship team in scoring.
Ray was a 4-time South Jersey Champ. He won back-to-back SJ gold medals for 120 High Hurdles as a sophomore and junior in 1943 & 1944, and back-to-back 220 Low Hurdles titles at the SJ Champs as a junior and senior in 1944 & 1945. In 1945 he was also Big Six Conference Champ in the Low Hurdles.
On February 26th 1944, Ray won the national crown in the indoor 60 YD Hurdles at the National Championship Interscholastic Track and Field Meet held at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. He repeated as national champion again in Feb of 1945.
